The Changing Face of Barton - The Train Station

Barton train station has changed dramatically over the last century.  The top image shows the station with the booking office and large waiting room.  It shows two train lines coming into Barton (merging into one at the station)   There is a horse and cart on the far-right delivering bicycles to the station.  These would have come from the local Hoppers works ready to be delivered round the country, or even the world.  In its time this would have been a very important hub for the town of Barton.  In contrast the bottom image shows what little is left of the station.  All the old buildings have been demolished, and the only waiting area now is the platform or the blue shelter.  There is only one line coming into Barton, and at one point it looked a possibility that there may well have been none.

Just as today, this Great Central train is a single carriage vehicle, shown at Barton station.

The train station really is a shadow of its former self, but still serves a purpose linking nicely with the bus station creating a hub for Barton people to get to Hull, Grimsby and Scunthorpe.
